Entry Requirement:

Those undertaking the Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis must have completed an Automotive Mechanical Certificate III qualification or be able to demonstrate equivalent competency.

The above statement equates to:

Student must have successfully completed AUR30620 Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology or an equivalent qualification or demonstrated equivalent competency.Datum College may consider a combination of the following evidence to determine whether the student meets the required entry competency:

• Australian or overseas automotive qualifications and associated transcripts.
• Statements of Attainment or other formal competency records.
• Detailed employment history demonstrating relevant automotive mechanical work.
• Employer statements or references confirming the nature, duration and level of automotive mechanical duties undertaken.
• Position descriptions and records of duties performed.
• Evidence of relevant automotive mechanical trade experience.
• Licences, registrations or industry certifications, where relevant.
• Evidence of professional development or manufacturer-specific technical training.
• Work samples, job cards, service records, diagnostic reports or other relevant workplace evidence.
• Structured technical interview and/or questioning.
• Practical demonstration of relevant automotive mechanical skills.
• Additional challenge tasks or competency assessments where documentary evidence alone is insufficient to determine competency.

In addition to above, student must also demonstrate that they:

• Have demonstrated an IELTS level at score of least 6.0 or equivalent (test results must be no more than 2 years old) or demonstration of successful completion of at least General English at Upper Intermediate or English for Academic Purposes Upper Intermediate level.
• Have a suitable level of language, literacy and numeracy to complete course requirements with or without additional support that Datum College is able to provide.
• Must be a proficient user of advanced calculators.
• Have successfully completed Australian year 10 or equivalent or must be of matured age with adequate LLN skills.
• Are at least at age of 18 on the date of course commencement.
• Student must have access to working PC or laptop with a configuration suitable to meet study requirements. Please seek your trainer/assessor assistance in this regard.
• Student must have sound digital literacy and access to working internet.

Please Note: All the students commencing this course are required to complete LLN test on the orientation day to assist Datum College to identify student’s needs for additional support during their study with Datum College.

Students must complete their practicals in the Datum College’s AUR facilities (nominated automotive workshop) or as advised otherwise.

Total Course Duration: 26 weeks, including 22 study weeks and 4 weeks of holidays.

Pathways:

Once students have successfully completed AUR40216 Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis, they can apply for jobs within the automotive industry which can include Performance Vehicle Technician or Automotive Master Technician.

The further study pathways available to students who undertake this qualification include:

• AUR50126 Diploma of Automotive Management
• AUR50216 Diploma of Automotive Technology
• Other Diplomas from other training packages, subject to meeting entry requirement of the intended qualification.

Course Structure:

A total of 10 Units (1 Core and 9 electives) must be completed and deemed competent to achieve the qualification AUR40226 Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis. Participants who achieve competency in any unit/s will receive a Statement of Attainment (provided USI is verified) for that unit/s without completing all 10 units in the qualification. Students completing all the required units of competency will attain full qualification.

Facilities and Resources

Automotive Technology A Systems Approach (Publisher: Cengage, 7th Edition)

Datum College ensures that the training delivered is to be at the standards expected of a real workplace environment. This program is delivered at our automotive workplace facilitates located at 210 William Street, St. Albans VIC 3121 (for VIC students) and at Unit 50, 7 Hoyle Avenue, Castle Hill NSW 2054 (for NSW students).

The facility meets the requirements of the training package. The workplace is fully functional Automotive workshop. With fully functional workshop, students will be able to develop their skills in a ‘real-time’ automotive service delivery environment. The automotive workshop is suitable for 4+ cars equipped with Four Vehicle Hoists installed. The workshop has been assessed for WHS and equipment to ensure that it meets the resource and equipment list required for the qualification as well as the number of students proposed.

The practical time will be allocated through detailed timetabling and will provide access for students to undertake practical training and assessment in a workshop environment. The simulated environment that will be in place for all units of competency will allow students to:

• Use facilities, equipment and materials that meet current industry standards
• Plan and prioritise multiple tasks to meet deadlines
• Experience the typical workflow for automotive tasks
• Work with others as part of a team
• Manage workflow and access to equipment
• Implementation of simulated environments will be monitored and improved as required through validation activities
